Is a Transfer Pipette Precise?

A transfer pipettes measurement refers to a method that allows for making measurements at a greater level of precision than typically achievable with the existing equipment. Differential measurements and ratio measurements are commonly employed as transfer methods in this context.

Introduction of Disposable Transfer Pipettes

A transfer pipette, also known as a dropper pipette, a pasteur pipette, pasteur pipets, teat pipets, droppers, eye droppers, or chemical droppers, are disposable plastic devices employed for transferring small liquid volumes, is a laboratory tool used for transferring small volumes of liquids between containers. The pipettes are made of glass or plastic and come in various sizes, ranging from 1mL to 10mL or more.
Comprising a long, slender tube and a molded bulb, these pipettes allow for the gentle compression and relaxation of the bulb to efficiently remove or dispense the desired liquid.
Transfer pipettes are often mistakenly perceived as ordinary, mass produced items. However, the manufacturing process of transfer pipettes can significantly impact their performance and potentially interfere with testing and experimental outcomes. These pipettes find widespread use across various applications, ranging from general purposes to delicate laboratory research. Notably, substantial variations exist among different brands of transfer pipettes.
Crucial factors such as materials, residual substances, ease of sample collection and dispensing, accuracy, and packaging vary between brands and contribute to the overall quality of the product. In addition to cost considerations, it is imperative to evaluate these attributes when selecting transfer pipettes. This publication presents a comparative analysis that highlights our evaluation findings, outlining considerations that are essential for users to make informed choices. Scientists and technicians should play a role in educating procurement teams about the significance of selecting the right transfer pipette for optimal performance in scientific endeavors.

Some Common Features of Disposable Transfer Pipettes Include:

Precision Tip: The pipette tip is designed with a narrow and tapered structure, facilitating accurate liquid transfer while minimizing the risk of spills or splashing.
Graduated Markings: Many transfer pipettes feature graduated markings along their sides, enabling users to precisely measure the quantity of liquid being transferred.
Disposable or Reusable: Transfer pipettes come in both disposable and reusable variations, their selection dependent on the material composition and intended application.
Sterility: Certain transfer pipettes are provided in a sterile condition, making them suitable for applications in sterile environments or for the transfer of biological materials.
Compatibility: Transfer pipettes exhibit compatibility with a diverse range of liquids, encompassing aqueous solutions, oils, and biological samples.
User Friendly: Transfer pipettes are designed for ease of use, incorporating a simple squeeze bulb or pipette controller that grants users control over the volume of liquid being transferred.
Cost Effective: Serving as a cost-effective tool for laboratory tasks, transfer pipettes are available in disposable options at a low cost, while reusable pipettes offer an extended lifespan, contributing to overall economic efficiency in laboratory operations.

Are These Disposable Transfer Pipettes Sterile?

Typically, our transfer pipettes are not sterile, with the exception of a specific sterile transfer pipette designed for use in required kits. It's important to note that the majority of experiments do not necessitate sterile pipettes, minimizing the relevance of sterility concerns.

How Do You Use a Disposable Transfer Pipette?

To aspirate liquid, hold the pipette vertically, gently depress the bulb, insert the tip into the liquid, and then gently release the bulb. Liquids should be drawn into the tube until the desired volume is achieved.
For liquid dispensing, place the tip into the tube or container, and gently depress the bulb to dispense the liquid. Always check to ensure that no liquid remains in the pipette. For precision in dispensing small volumes of liquid, consider gently squeezing the barrel of the pipette instead of the bulb.
Experimental Methodology
We conducted a comparative analysis between two brands of Transfer Pipettes. Thirty pipettes of each type were filled to their highest volume graduation with distilled water. Subsequently, the water was transferred and expelled into a weigh boat on a scale, and the volume was precisely weighed and recorded. For pipettes lacking graduations, fifteen were filled to their maximum intake with a single squeeze. The dispensed volume was then weighed. Accuracy was quantified as the percentage difference between the intended volume and the measured volume, while reproducibility was determined by calculating the percentage Coefficient of Variation (CV).
In total, one hundred pipettes from each catalog number were thoroughly examined to identify any defects or flaws.
Results and Discussion
While transfer pipettes are not designed to match the precision of their piston-driven counterparts, a certain level of accuracy and reproducibility is crucial for meaningful comparisons between different brands. Accuracy, in this context, refers to the variance between the intended and dispensed volumes. Table 1 presents a comparison of various transfer pipette brands, evaluating % accuracy and reproducibility (%CV) with a sample size (n) of 30.
In both 3 mL and 4 mL sizes, Samco 225 and Samco 233 transfer pipettes exhibited significantly higher accuracy and reproducibility compared to the competitor's pipettes.
The observed differences in accuracy and reproducibility in the 3 mL and 4 mL competitor's transfer pipettes may be attributed to their more rigid and stiffer construction, making it challenging to fill or empty the full graduated volume. Notably, the competitor's 3 mL pipette proved to be the most difficult to fill.
Visual appearance and other quality indicators were also considered for brand comparison. All tested brands showed some degree of embedded particulate matter in the material, likely remnants of burnt base resin, a common byproduct of molding. In terms of visual inclusions, all pipettes exhibited comparable levels, with no observed holes in the bulb, cracks, or blocked tips.
A slippery film was detected on certain competitor pipettes, which was extracted and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The analysis revealed the presence of Oleamide/Erucamide, a common slip agent in injection molding. Notably, no residual Oleamide was found via FTIR on Samco brand transfer pipettes. Oleamides and Erucamides are potential concerns as sources of interference in specific biological assays, such as G protein-coupled fatty acid receptor assays.
