Types Of Urinary Catheter Bags
There are 2 main types of urinary catheter:
Intermittent catheters: These catheters are temporarily inserted into the bladder and removed once the bladder is emptied.
Indwelling catheters: These catheters are designed to remain in place for an extended period, ranging from many days to weeks, and they are secured by a water-filled balloon within the bladder.
Many individuals favor the use of indwelling catheters due to their convenience, eliminating the need for repeated catheter insertions, which are associated with intermittent catheters. However, it's important to note that indwelling catheters are more prone to causing issues, including infections (as discussed below).
Inserting either type of catheter can be uncomfortable, and to alleviate any discomfort, anesthetic gel is applied. Some discomfort may also be experienced while the catheter is in position, but over time, most individuals with a long-term catheter adapt to this discomfort.
How To Shower With Your Foley Catheter Bag
It is acceptable to take a shower while your catheter is in position. However, it is not advisable to take a bath until the catheter is removed, as bathing with the catheter in place can increase the risk of infections.
When showering, ensure that you always use your night bag, as it is designed to be waterproof. Avoid showering with your leg bag, as it has cloth on the side and may not dry as quickly.
