The Difference Serum Plasma Whole Blood

All blood after anticoagulation treatment is whole blood; Plasma is the yellowish liquid obtained after the blood cells are removed by centrifugation. If the blood is allowed to coagulate by itself without anticoagulant treatment, the blood will automatically agglutinate under the action of a series of coagulation factors within a period of time after blood drawing. The blood will first coagulate into a whole, and then after a period of time or centrifuge.
Serum and plasma are both important components of blood, and the two concepts are easily confused. we will show you the differences as follows:
1. The biggest difference between serum and plasma is whether there is fibrinogen. Serum is the liquid precipitated after blood coagulation, which does not contain fibrinogen. Plasma is the material left after the removal of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and other blood cells, so it contains a fibrinogen and will coagulate after standing;

2. In terms of color, serum is colorless and transparent liquid, while plasma is light yellow and transparent liquid, which is caused by the bilirubin contained in plasma; The density of plasma is higher than that of serum because plasma contains more clotting factors and calcium ions.
In blood drawing for testing, some testing requirements are often encountered with serum testing, whole blood testing and plasma testing, which refers to the three main processing methods and requirements of blood samples.

1) Serum is mainly used for blood biochemistry, immunity and other aspects of determination;

2) Plasma is mainly used for the determination of coagulation and other aspects;

3) Whole blood is often used in the measurement of blood cells, blood routine, sedimentation rate and other aspects.

Anticoagulant is needed for blood anticoagulant treatment, which anticoagulant should be selected according to specific experimental requirements.
